WP2 - Field-scale FOC monitoring
WP2 provides new understanding and progress in data analysis and processing workflows to improve the interpretation of field-scale fibre-optic measurements so that we can eventually quantify the physical state – primarily stress, deformation, failure, and temperature in the near-well region, including the well components and the host formation.

Field Laboratory for development and testing of technologies for quantitative monitoring of CO2 storage

Basic processing at Svelvik CO2 Field Lab.
Existing data from several small-to-medium scale field campaigns already performed will serve as a basis for development of data analysis, processing and interpretation methods including how to efficiently handle large amounts of data, locate and discriminate between signal sources, suppress noise, as well as identify and enhance identification of useful signals. It will also allow analyze data quality as a function of fibre installation methods and configuration (e.g., straight vs. helical, inside vs. outside casing), fibre-formation coupling, hardware configuration and data quality, and lastly the difference between DSS and low-frequency DAS (LF-DAS).
Both existing and newly acquired data from outside- and inside-casing fibre optic monitoring will be analysed. The comparison of data acquired using the two fibre configurations will indicate whether or not inside-casing is adequate or comparable to outside-casing installation, and/or will quantify the potential benefits of the latter.
Input from WP1 in the form of material models and estimates of the fibre-formation coupling impact will be important in calibrating the strain response of outside-casing measurements. The results from WP2 will feed further into WP3 (numerical modelling), and vice-versa, including inversion and predicted signal patterns.
Four tasks are defined in WP2:
- Task 2.1 FOC data handling and signal-improvement methods
- Task 2.2 FOC field data quantitative interpretation
- Task 2.3 FOC measurements and fibre coupling in field scale
- Task 2.4 Outside-casing FOC data monitoring
